Backup Isn't the Same as Disaster Recovery
A backup is a copy of your data. Disaster recovery is getting your business running again from that copy, quickly and in the right order. Most businesses we meet have the first and assume it covers the second.
Two numbers sit at the heart of every recovery plan. Your Recovery Point Objective (RPO) is how much data you can afford to lose: if you back up once a night, you could lose up to a day's work. Your Recovery Time Objective (RTO) is how long you can afford to be down. We agree both with you for each key system, then build the backup and recovery setup to meet them.
Modern approaches make those targets far easier to hit than old tape-based backups. Cloud backups, virtualised servers that can be restarted elsewhere, and continuous replication can bring systems back in hours rather than days. Our cloud services page covers that side in more detail.

Where Business Backups Usually Go Wrong
In our experience, the problems are rarely a lack of backups. They're backups nobody has checked.
- Backups failing quietly. A backup job that stopped weeks ago, with nobody checking the alerts.
- The wrong things being backed up. The server is covered, but the accounts database moved to a new folder last year.
- Assuming Microsoft 365 is backed up. Microsoft keeps your service running, but its built-in retention isn't the same as an independent backup you control.
- Backups on the same network. Ransomware that reaches your files can often reach a backup drive plugged into the same system.
- Nobody knowing how to restore. The backup exists, but the person who set it up left years ago.
