The Benefits of Server Virtualisation
Server virtualisation lets one physical server run several virtual servers, each behaving as an independent machine. The main benefits are lower hardware costs, since fewer physical servers are needed, faster backup and disaster recovery, since a virtual server can be restored onto different hardware quickly, and better use of existing capacity, since most physical servers run well under their actual capability. The trade-off worth knowing is that virtualisation adds a layer of complexity, and if the underlying host server fails, every virtual server running on it is affected at once, which is why proper backup and redundancy planning matters just as much as the virtualisation itself.
